11/20/22 - Psalm 92 - "Rediscovering the Lord’s Day"

Preface Argument - In Recent History, What Has Changed?

  • 1930’s - All stores were closed on Sunday

  • 1950-70’s - stores began to open with limited supply for shopping, NFL thought broadcasting a game on Sunday would not be productive because “no one would watch.”

  • Our day today - Every store is open, and NFL dominates Sunday TV

Section 1 - Rediscovering Biblical Sabbath Principles

Argument: “What does biblical theology indicate?”

  • Gen. 2:1-3: A Sabbath Day is a Creational Institution (pre-fall)

  • Ex. 16: A Sabbath Day is a Pre-Mosaic Institution (post-fall)

  • Ex. 20:11: 4th Commandment given, relating to the creation institution

  • Ex. 31:12-17: the Sabbath is related to as a covenant between God and humanity

  • Deut. 5:12-15: the Sabbath is related to a time to remember exile and deliverance

  • Matt. 12:8; Mk. 2:28; Lk. 6:5: Jesus is Lord of the Sabbath (Ceremonial fulfillment and Moral Obligation)

  • Heb. 4:7b-13: The Sabbath in the New Covenant is a foreshadow of ultimate rest

  • Rev. 1:10: John was worshipping on the “Lord’s Day”

Main Point (Section 1):

The Sabbath is engrained within Biblical Theology. Due to God’s WORK, His people set aside a day dedicated solely to the Lord where they don’t work, but worship. It is rooted in creation (pre-fall), and anticipated in re-creation (post-fall).

Section 2 - Rediscovering Apostolic Sabbath Patterns

Argument: “What does apostolic practice indicate?”

  • Matt. 28:1; Mk. 16:2; Lk. 24:1; Jn. 20:1, 19: Jesus Christ’s resurection happened on the “first day of the week”

  • John 20:26; Acts 2:1, 20:7; 1 Cor. 16:2: Pattern of something special happening on the “first day of the week.”

Argument: “What does historic practice indicate?”

  • Early Church: Apostles Christians left Judaism 7th Day Sabbath, and observed the Sabbath Day on the 1st Day of the week.

  • Middle Ages: Thomas Aquinus, Summa Theologica, “In the New Covenant, the observance of the Lord’s Day took the place of the observance of the Sabbath, not by virtue of the precept (law or commandment of God, but by the institution of the church and the custom of the Christian people, for this observance is not figurative, as was the observance of the Sabbath in the Old Covenant, hence the prohibition to work on the Lord’s Day is not so strict as on the Sabbath and certain works are permitted on the Lord’s Day, which were forbidden on the Sabbath.”

  • Modern Age: The Protestant Reformation confronted the Pope dictating holy days, and they were against any manmade construct, however, they still attended church on Sunday. Later in this period of history, confessions, catechisms, and councils were formed to discuss the Lord’s Day (i.e. The Heidelberg Catechism (1563), Westminster Confession (1647), London Baptist Confession (1689), the Synod of Dort (1619).

  • Contemporary Age: Began to recover the relation between Apostolic practice and the moral aspects of the 4th commandment. and creational ordinance.

London Baptist Confession of Faith (1689), Section 7

“It is the law of nature that in general a portion of time specified by God should be set apart for the worship of God. So by his Word, in a positive-moral and perpetual commandment that obligates everyone in every age, he has specifically appointed one day in seven for a sabbath to be kept holy to him (Ex. 20). From the beginning of the world to the resurrection of Christ the appointed day was the last day of the week. After the resurrection of Christ it was changed to the first day of the week, which is called the Lord’s Day (1 Cor. 16; Acts 20, Rev. 1).

London Baptist Confession of Faith (1689), Section 8

“The Sabbath is kept holy to the Lord when people have first prepared their hearts appropriately and arranged their everyday affairs in advance. Then they observe a holy rest all day from their own works, words and thoughts about their secular employment and recreation (Isa. 58; Neh. 13). Not only that, but they also fill the whole time with public and private acts of worship and the duties of necessity and mercy (Matt. 12).

Main Point (Section 2):

Observing the Lord’s Day as the Christian Sabbath was a practice of the Apostolic Body (rooted into the 4th commandment and a creational institution). This first day of the week is marked in the fulfillment of Jesus Christ as the day of His resurrection. So by Apostolic pattern and precept, Sunday is the Christian Sabbath day set aside as Holy.

Section 3 - Recovering Sabbath Principles and Patterns Today

Argument: “How can we honor God’s Sabbath today?”

Just as a day equals a period of time between Sun-up to Sun-down, so too, the Lord’s Day should be a Sabbath Day where the church turns attention off of duties of life and worships God (the theme of Psalm 92!)

It ought to look like: Sunday morning corporate worship, leading to afternoon reflections, until reassembling corporately Sunday evening for praise and prayer. It is a day that should be a blessing; not a duty, but a delight! The world can have 6 days, but Sunday belongs to the Lord.

Main Point (Section 3):

The Christian Sabbath is for us to solemnly uphold and prioritize. All church life ought to occur on Sunday and be visible to the world to “see” the salvation of God. Faithful observance of such a day should be viewed as not just an hour on Sunday, not an option among others, not equivalent to a nap, but the entire day given to God in cognitive and corporate engagement in worship.

Closing Thoughts:

The Lord’s Day is Sunday, and is a DAY that is…

  1. Instituted by God at creation

  2. Ceremonially fulfilled in Jesus Christ

  3. Morally and Apostolicly transcendent for all time

  4. Used for recharging and refreshing

  5. Used to turn off the lies of the world

  6. Turn our attention upon the truth of Heaven

  7. Intended to hear God and remind us of our salvation

  8. A gift (not a duty, but a delight)

  • Common Biblical refutes against a Christian Sabbath Observance today:

    • Romans 14:5-6 - but the reference to days in the passage is contextually speaking about “how the stronger brother can love the weaker brother—” especially in context of days consisting of food (In other words, (referring to new Jewish converts), the stronger brother should be ok with eating vegetables, if that is what the conscience of his brother is only able to eat vegetables without being pressured into eating meat.”

    • Gal. 4:10 - Context of days here is thinking that salvation is found in observance of days alone (still applies today, because we are not saved by attending church on Sunday!)

    • Col. 2:16-17 - Mosaic institutions were a shadow of things to come in Jesus Christ. So this applies that we are not bound to those mosaic institutions, because Jesus came and fulfilled the law. Though as a creational ordinance, the “substance” of the Christian Sabbath is both fulfillment and anticipation of eternal rest with Jesus in Heaven.
